Assignment 1 - Proof of Concept

Flight of the Intruder (Mosferatu)

A short rough-cut demonstrating part of the opening act of the full film. This is sans-grading and polished audio, serving as a rough ideation of the look, feel and style of the project subject to addtional material being shot and, if required, a possible reshoot. The subtle shift in style at the end, going from tripod to handheld, signals a transition towards wilder and more extreme shots as chaos ensues.

Project strategy

We determined we had three options to approach the film; one was to film a short sequence as a proof, then reshoot the entire film in the second half of term; the second was to complete this film entirely and then shoot a new project for the final submission; the third was to shoot the entire film now as best we could, cut a short rough draft as proof of concept, and then edit, grade, and shoot additional footage for the final submission (or reshoot if necessary). We chose option three, and organised the complete shoot in only a few weeks. The entire film was shot in a single day using a pre-prepared set and thorough pre-production. This left little time to edit the proof of concept, but enough to test if the ideation worked. Further editing will reveal any additional footage required and how to adjust both the pace and look of the final product. It does start slow at the moment, purely because the idea was to drop the footage in first and then cut back to the right pace. It also does not show some of the more technically complicated shots we have for the opening. With this production plan we have several weeks to craft and polish the finished edit if we decide a reshoot is not required. If we do choose to reshoot our props, location and equipment will not need to be changed, so organisation would be faster and easier.
